As a pioneer in the field of research and science, Deutsche Telekom promotes innovation, relying on the close meshing of science and industry. Thus, rapidly available, innovative solutions are created for the benefit of customers and to further develop the information society.
T-City Friedrichshafen
In May 2006 Deutsche Telekom in conjunction with the Deutscher Städte- und Gemeindebund (German Association of Towns and Municipalities, DStGB) launched the T‑City innovation competition for towns and municipalities having a population of between 25,000 and 100,000 people. The brief was to submit plans and concepts for linking the greatest possible number of private enterprise offerings and municipal services, in which the use of a high-speed broadband infrastructure would play a significant role. In February 2007, a jury representing the 52 competing towns selected the city of Friedrichshafen as winner of the competition and the new T-City. Modern infrastructure, tailor-made IT solutions and the implementation of many service ideas are bound to ensure that the quality of life and community amenities is going to improve distinctly for this city on the shores of Lake Constance. Deutsche Telekom will make available additional HR, infrastructure and financial services worth up to EUR 80 million until the end of the project in 2012 in order to put selected project ideas into practice in the city.
Deutsche Telekom Laboratories
Together with the Technical University in Berlin, Deutsche Telekom is heavily involved in communication and information technology research and development. At the laboratories, internationally-acclaimed scientists and Group staff members work together to develop products and services of the future. The initiative is also a contribution by business towards enhancing Germany's status as a location for research and development.
Deutsche Telekom Laboratories also has an off-campus branch in Israel in cooperation with Ben Gurion University. Research at the off-campus site is focused on the themes of "security in telecommunications," "intelligence in networks” and “intuitive usability."
Technology you can touch
Thinking ahead also means involving the public and making ideas vivid. Deutsche Telekom's T-Gallery, located in its Bonn headquarters, gives a live and interactive insight into the diversity of ideas and technologies developed by the Group. With the motto "Welcome to the Future," the gallery stages regular events for customers, business partners and employees from throughout the Group.
Leipzig University of Applied Sciences
The Deutsche Telekom Fachhochschule Leipzig (Leipzig University of Applied Sciences), a government recognized university privately sponsored by Deutsche Telekom, has offered masters courses in communication engineering and telecommunications computer science since 1992. The university puts particular importance on a career preparatory and practice-oriented education.
